Well, other than reading about culture and our relation to it, I enjoy typically two specific writing periods/styles/approaches- whatever you want to cal it. As I am thinking, writing these words, I am realizing just how well my analytical approach lends itself to the writing I am most akin to. These two periods, well, I reluctantly use the word ‘period’ because it is easy to argue that one (if not both) of these two styles has reached all the way to a contemporary style and approach than the other; As well relates specifically to the time and cultural standards in which it was written- which all art &amp; writing does in a sense, but one, in my eyes, defined and approach to writing as well as life. As I wrap myself up in run on sentences I’ll stop myself by finally saying which two I have the most fascination with: One being ‘Southern Literature’ [for lack of a better term] and the other being ‘The Beats’. <br/> <br/>I am going to start with the southern lit.s because my fascination for that writing was sparked at the same time as the height of my anthropological studies. For starters I would like to point out that I am not talking about the Faulkner’s and the Twain’s- however fascinating, not quite the draw as some of the more fantastical centered works. The parts of this period (which if you read any Kingsolver’s, Angelou’s and Morrison’s books you can see the style reaches contemporary writers) that I enjoy most are the ones written about every day life, and suffering, but mix in tales and explanations based on old stories verbally passed down from generation to generation and old wives tales. <br/> <br/>There is insight into this thing we call life, the slave days, the hard heat, the discrimination, and the descriptions of the good times in this most difficult period. Brings me directly to the cotton-picking fields and dusty roads to feel the hot wind whip across my face. All of this learning and reading was really brought to fruition while living in a framing community a few years ago, driving down hot farm roads- seeing how the field workers are treated, being transported in 115+ degree heat in old prison buses. Being told first hand stories of having to hide to eat their lunch, not even given any water. <br/> <br/>Started to teach pre-school in a children’s center specifically geared towards caring for the children of the men and women who suffer to pick our vegetables and being discriminated against (to put lightly- but in no way am I comparing my minute experience to anyone else’s life) because I was trying to help, but in “their” eyes I was taking a job away from one of the women still stuck in the fields, which I understood, but that didn’t matter to anyone but me really. The point of all this is that somehow this ‘Southern Literature’ put a spin on my approach to life and how I perceive people that suffer no matter by whose hands they were put there. </div> <div> posted in <a href="http://faernworks.tribe.net">Faernworks</a> - 0 replies </div>

<div>(blogg with photo that goes with it... <br/>http://people.tribe.net/faern/blog/a8824097-24e7-4f79-8f68-8934822afe99) <br/> <br/>INSPIRATIONS: <br/> <br/>The Word ; The Time Period ; The Book <br/> <br/>Why does this artist choose the realm of words as her first inspirational description? <br/> <br/>Simply put, words are part of an art form that is most widely understood: transferable &amp; translatable. <br/>It’s so easy to always have all of these words bouncing around in my head all of the time thinking something is being formed when in actuality that’s all it is, words bouncing around. So, today I would like to write about just how important those words are to me. Important is the wrong word, as if I set out to choose the way I think, which is totally inherent, intrinsic- not necessarily inspired- until I do something with it. <br/> <br/>Where did the words come from; and how is it I get them on this unlined paper meant for sketching? Not exactly sure; I have such a hard time keeping my head strait nowadays that I am surprised I got this far. What I have been thinking of writing about is not the words bouncing around, not the act of writing and formulating thoughts onto the page, but precisely the type of reading I enjoy, the books I cannot put down, the pages I have to turn. <br/> <br/>It is safe to say that I enjoy research, but always my own research. When I was studying, researching, analyzing and presenting from memory in college the people I was studying with were so advanced in their approach to thought that we still used books to do our work- checking out special editions, sometimes wearing white cotton gloves to turn the pages of these precious collections, underused because research online was becoming increasingly more popular- and once the switch was made from page to computer my zest for doing research slipped out of my grasp. <br/> <br/>This in no way outweighs my enjoyment of the other types of reading, in fact, they are all equal- what was this research you ask? Anthropology- Cultural and Archaeological. It was more the method in which we learned that was the drive, and the professor. Now, don’t get me wrong, I have in my years of many schools have had many impressive instructors- but in no way can any of these people touch what Dr. Brian Fagan accomplished as an Archaeologist and as a professor. This man changed, rather, woke up the way I look at the world. He actually promoted free thinking in his classrooms, learned just as much from us as we did for him, and developed a new way of learning. To top it all off he was excited every single day he came to class. May I add, he had an amazing amount of support for me (the others too, of course) But I was the young undergrad, fresh out of city-college, that walked into his upper level graduate classes and said “I have to be here”. If it weren’t for him, and a handful of art instructors I never would have made it through UCSB. <br/> <br/>Now, why is all of this being brought up, classes, college and all, when I am writing about the written word that is part of my drive? Because to dive into a “textbook” written by dr. Brian Fagan is to dive into a book about life and the world as we ‘should’ see it. <div>DRAWING/and the like <br/> <br/>pens: writing/ medium ball point, preferably ball point nd black <br/> <br/>drawing/ <br/>pens: top of the list is a calligraphy style dip pen, the kind where you can change the tips, with a medium flat or angled tip- preferably walnut ink, but suni is damn cool too. <br/>i have always like the micron pens in a variety of sizes, ut over the past few years the faber-castel, pitt artist pens have really grown on me. they come ina variety of shapes and sizes, as well as colors. <br/> <br/>markers: whatever i can get my hand on, but i am partial to a china marker, which isn't rea;lly a marker, but more of a wax peel-off crayon. (not to be confused with a peel off litho crayon, which is really cool for different reasons) <br/>for technical drawing i have been using prismacolor and this other brand for so long i can't even remember how long... <br/>but i also uase your basic sharpies a lot cause they write on anything, but it really depends on what i am doing cause the pens mentioned above are india ink, which is archival, so if that works i will go with that. <br/> <br/>pencils: i have these always with me, i think there are even at least one of these in my camera case, <br/>ebony, jet black extra smooth and draughting (both are made by sanford) and a woodelss pencil, 4b. these pencils are really cheap, so it's nice to mix it up- i am also partial to an austrian brand- cretacolor, specificallly the nero 350#3- the smoothest charcoal pencil you will ever use! <br/>a carpenter's pencil, cause of the shape. <br/>the stabilo pencil, some sort of wax deal, so fun cause it writes on anything! <br/> <br/>erasers: my first good drawing teacher went through our artboxes the first day and threw them away. SURE i have them, but most of the time can't find them... <br/> <br/>sharpeners: i was taught to use a blade really young, but that doesn't always work the way i want it AND it gets tossed at an airport. <br/>so, the one sharpener i actually like is this tiny stainless steal sharpener from germany, i think, caled kum precision, comes with two blades, ihave had mine for a few years and havn't had to change it. <br/> <br/>pastels/ don't use them much <br/>chalk:: not really into chalk anymore- but if i were to use it i would go for conte first, not black, only the natural colors and white- <br/>if i were looking for bright color, nu-pastel by prismacolor is easier to deal with than the real dusty chalk and easier to control like conte, great combination. <br/>oil: i am partial to sennelier 9but i reallt do not like their paint, it smells aweful to me) smooth and the pigments can't be matched in m y opinion. <br/> <br/>paper: the good stuff, cotton or rice, but of course it depend on the project <br/> <br/>so there, those are my favorites when it comes to drawing</div> <div> posted in <a href="http://faernworks.tribe.net">Faernworks</a> - 0 replies </div>

I tell him not to forget that I am going to need passes- this free concert is going to be madness- “ok” he says “call me when you are on your way to the venue” ok, no problemo- live in the sunset, it’s in my neighborhood/ kinda/ it wont take me too long to get there- WRONG <br/> <br/>Ok- so here’s where the fun begins. Per usual I am running late. I didn’t used to always run late – I guess I ‘grew into it’- so- of course we miss the train- damn- and the next one isn’t for 20 to 25 minutes (it’s Sunday)- double damn- ok, so josh says he’ll drive- I say no, it will be impossible to park-he says it will be cool- it’s a residential neighborhood- plenty of parking over there- but of course we really have no idea cause neither of us have spent much time there before. We go- get the car some 6 blocks away and get on the road- on the way there we hit an immense amount of traffic- shit- is this for the concert??? Of course it is, Stern grove is nowhere near the size of a stadium- but somehow… they have a band playing that sells out stadiums… criminy… <br/>So, we finally get close to the place- I call Uli- he’s all “where are you the first band is about to go on??” I say “I’m almost there- 10, 15 minutes…” “ok he says, no big deal call me when you are here and I will call you right back…”and Ulises being just like me, he isn’t going to get the passes I need until he SEES me- so I don’t even ask… <br/>We pull up to stern grove- and there are hoards of people just milling around- shit- what’s going on? -shit- the gate is closed… NO FURTHUR ADMITTANCE- PARK IS FULL. <br/>I stop for a minute, take a deep breath and hiss under my breath “I NEED this” so josh says- “get out of the car here, I’ll park and call you” that was the last I saw of him for a few hours… <br/>I get out of the car and frantically call Uli again- no answer- the security guards are screaming “this entrance is closed”please leave”no further admittance”. I call him again just as the sheriff pulls up- still no answer- I leave a message with the situation and calmly survey the scene with my heart racing- and again the security guard “THIS entrance is closed” this? THIS? HOW MANY ARE THERE?? So I start snooping around. A man older than my parents comes up to the woman next to me, his wife, and says “You know you can sneak in right over there” “Excuse me” I say, so he shows me- yay- but then he goes to tell the security guard that they aren’t doing their job very well, they aren’t blocking all of the entrances- funny- his wife is all “Ay, what is he doing now? What is he telling them for??? If you are going to get in there, you better get goin’ girl” <br/>So I run off to get in before they block off everything, all the neat sneak in spots this man has just gifted me. I start walking really fast up 19th ave around the periphery of the park poking my head through the trees periodically to see where security is- shit I see one- and run back out- I hear him yell at some girl and she comes out right where I am and I ask her “was that you he was yelling at?” she says yes- shoot- then some other girl comes trotting up- (sheesh I wish I asked her name, she was great) she’s all “we have to get in! let’s go this way!- I know a better way into this place!!” so we run off together, walk around the back of Stern Grove- try again to get in- no go- damn security- a little further- they can’t block every hole in the trees- so finally we can get in far enough away from security that we can run into a crowd and blend. So we are in- we can hear the music- but we are so high up in the trees on the back hill that we can’t anything but a sea of people- thousands and thousands of people we now have to swim through- so we start hiking down around through over wine bottles, blankets, children down down down- and at some point in this descent is where I lost my partner in crime. <br/>I start weaving through the crowd on my own- finally catch sight of the stage- but can’t see how to actually get to it. Finally as I sneak in and around for a little longer- I can see how!-I am closer to stage left so I go that way- closer closer- shit- a line- for what?? Bah- more security- fucking hell- I am right at stage left- OZOMATLI is setting up at this point- and I barely get there in time- with my heart pounding this is going through my head “I need this, these are my friends that I never get to see, I have to shoot- I HAVE TOO!” so I finally tell the security guard that is blocking my way what the deal is- he wont listen- what do I do now? At this point I am practically jumping up and down like a crazed fan trying to get someone’s attention on the stage. Oh my goodness- then I see it- my chance- there are two people right on the other side of the fence- right there- I yell “hey hey please come here” with a huge smile- it’s the violin guy! Yay! I say “where’s Uli?” he says “Some interview” then I let him know to PLEASE tell him I am here- [ I don’t know what I was thinking when I picked the wrong side of the stage- I know which side the horns play from damnit!] he says “I’ll try” I straiten up- look him in the eye and say ”But I am here to take pictures of you” <br/>Next thing I know I see Uli and Shef on the stage- THE OTHER SIDE OF COURSE – shoot- I start jumping up and down waving my hands frantically- and then I see the violin guy (damn I wish I could remember his name- I believe he went to Jr. High with Uli and I) talking to Uli and pointing at the crown in my general direction- here I am waving my arms around- and then I see Ulises see me and I see him say ‘fuck yeah’ and he runs across the stage and yells “Where do you wanna be?” I say- “I have to shoot man!” he tells me to go back behind me and come around the building behind the stage – so I run back through the crowd and race up to another security checkpoint [ it’s a good thing no one ever looked for the green hand stamp we were supposed to have] I see Uli- running at me- he tells security “She’s with us” this security woman says “NOT until she has the pass on” so this poor guy that is minutes from performing infront of thousands has to run, get my pass, run back and give it to me- so he does this- runs back to security- waves the passes at security and then starts trotting away holding them behind him like he is running a relay race- so I run after him, grab them stick the media pass on- go back to the security woman who was actually really nice- she thanked me for my patience- ha, if she only knew- I asked her to put on my orange bracelet- now I can go anywhere- I am good to go! <br/>I even had a minute to get settled in the photo pit and check out the video equipment the other photographers had. <br/>They played an awesome show- when they came on stage Shef hadn’t even noticed I was there yet- so I got an excited hello from him as he picked up his trombone for the first song. The show was really one to be seen, the energy was tremendous- I took some really great shots- it felt so GOOD to be doing that again, such a rush- and at the end of the show- after their usual tour through the crowd with ‘Ya se fue’ I am back stage and Ulises jogs up to me, gives me a big hug and whispers the words “finally, a second” and then he was off to sign cd’s.
